Walnut Street Bridge

Once an abandon bypass is turning into reality. Known as the “Goat Path” to locals. The property on which Goat Path is located was acquired decades ago by the PennDOT for a new roadway, but public opposition and funding issues at the time resulted in those plans being shelved.

The right-of-way became noted as a place local farmers grazed their livestock – thus the nickname. Now a small portion of the Goat Path will now serve as a bypass in in East Lampeter Township connecting route 30 and Greenfield Road. The Walnut Street bridge was created to reduce and ease traffic congestion around Greenfield Road in the Lancaster area.

The project will extend the street 1.2 miles of 2 lane road to commercial and residential areas. The new extension is expected to divert 500 to 600 vehicles per hour off Greenfield Road during peak hours. The nearly $22 million project in East Lampeter Township is a collaboration between the state and High Real Estate Group LLC to connect Greenfield to Route 30.

Kinsley Construction was awarded the project and PennDOT will take ownership after project completion. High Steel Structures provide bridge steel packages that will go over Millcross Road. The Walnut Street bridge consists of a total of 18 plates girders that spans 167 feet in length and is 54 feet wide.

Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its coating performance, durability, and life cycle cost. This will allow for low maintenance for the bridge and save taxpayers money for maintenance on the bridge.
