Knoebels Giant Log Flume

Knoebels Amusement Park's popular log flume ride underwent major refurbishment in 2023, with both new manufactured parts and existing components receiving hot-dip galvanizing to combat corrosion from 33 years of exposure to chlorinated water environments. The tight winter timeline ensured the beloved attraction would be ready for eager patrons when warm weather returned.

Knoebels Amusement park is located in Elysburg PA-  an hour and 30 mins north of Harrisburg, PA. The family owned and operated business is the largest free admission amusement park in the United States. The park opened on July 4th, 1926.  Over the years the park has grown in popularity and has added over 50 rides and attractions.

In 1989 it was announced that the park was bringing in a new attraction and in 1990 the park opened the log flume ride. The ride was originally manufactured by O.D Hopkins Associates. The structure was originally designed around the rich history of coal mining towns in the area.

Passengers climb into log boats and take a 5-minute ascent through tunnels, curves, and two different lifts before splashing down into splash ponds at 50 feet per second.

This attraction is very popular during the summer because the patrons can cool down on warm summer days and enjoy a thrilling ride.

In the summer of 2023, the ride inspectors and maintenance crew wanted to make some manufacturing upgrades to the log flume ride. The ride was originally built and installed in 1990 and over time the ride was receiving a lot of wear and tear on the parts. Due to the many years of service in a corrosive, chlorinated environment, the park maintenance crew found a few areas where corrosion was accumulating and wanted to make to the ride more aesthetically appealing. During the fall of 2023 the park crew started to disassemble the flume ride for refurbishment. The newer parts were manufactured by Big B MFG in Klingerstown and the galvanizer took on stripping the old galvanizing coating and recoating as well as galvanizing the new manufactured parts. It was a dash to the finish line because of the tight deadline with the warm weather around the corner and excited park patrons ready to hop on their favorite ride.

Tait Road Bridge replacement featuring hot-dip galvanized steel

Tait Ave Bridge

Tait Road Bridge's 85-foot replacement utilized hot-dip galvanized steel girders, guardrail, and decking to meet critical timeline requirements while providing long-term corrosion protection in the corrosive environment near Otter Creek. The county chose galvanized steel for its material availability, cost-effectiveness, and durability under urgent replacement conditions.

Pinecrest I74 Bridge

The Pinecrest I-74 Bridge replacement features a 214-foot, two-span structure with hot-dip galvanized composite plate girders supporting cast-in-place concrete decking, designed to eliminate low clearance safety issues from the original 1959 bridge. IDOT specified galvanizing for its proven longevity value in bridge infrastructure, with staged construction maintaining traffic flow during replacement.

One uCity Square

This custom steel sculpture was engineered specifically for hot-dip galvanizing with careful consideration of kettle dimensions, drainage placement, and warping prevention, then finished with a striking 2-part epoxy coating in blue and brown. The project transformed rigid steel into fluid movement while achieving lasting durability through galvanized corrosion protection and vibrant color finishes.

OSU Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital

OSU Wexner Medical Center's $1.9 billion inpatient hospital tower utilized hot-dip galvanized steel for mechanical floors 7-10, including HVAC louvre support and curtain wall systems housing equipment at the top of Ohio State University's largest capital project in history.
