Augusta Memorial Bridge

The Challenge, The Solution, The Results
The old rail and steel sections of this project were in a terrible, rotted state of corrosion. It was not hard to convince the state that a duplex system of paint-over-hot dip galvanizing was the answer for the rehabilitation. Several reference jobs were submitted to convince that a good performing duplex system could also be the answer to the supplying the look they were after.
The references submitted were inspected for the durability of the coating. Past AGA award winner Eadsd Bridge of St. Louis, Missouri, was inspected, and was very helpful in proving the durability of the coating and the corrosion resistance needed.
The quality of the hot-dip galvanizing was very carefully written into the specification that allowed the fabricator, galvanizer, and owner to be on the same page when design, fabrication, and galvanizing came together. Very good open communication between the fabricator and the galvanizer, thanks to the specification requesting this, was a strong reason for the success of this project. Paint used on the project had to be matched to the 50-plus year old paint used previously.
This project was one of the first bridges in Maine, and carries as much sentimental value as need and practicality.
