Himalayan Kedarnath Temple Pilgrimage Bridge

The previous Bridge was washed out by flooding, in 2013. This resulted in over 5700 people dead or missing. The recovery from this natural disaster took over 2 years.

The Kedarnath Temple (AKA Lord Shiva's Temple), is a very important part of the Hindu culture and religion. Hundreds of thousands of Hindu Pilgrims from all over the world take the trek to this Temple each year. The Temple is 3500 feet above sea level and the previous year the journey was over 35 kilometers and proved to be too much.

With equipment needed and the challenging topography it would take more than 3 years to build a typical approved bridge and impossible to paint or maintain. The galvanized bridge was shipped in containers from the USA and completed in an incredible 45 days. Within weeks more than 500,000 pilgrims reduced their trek to 14 kilometers at a manageable 2600 feet above sea level.

Galvanizing in this remote part of the world is not easily available. When they found they could get the bridge not only fast but also galvanized that was the deciding factor.
